Lewis Texada and family papers, 1830-1939.

Papers pertain to property ownership in Rapides Parish, including property acquired from the estate of Henry A. Bullard (1845-1866). Letters (1864-1866) from Louisiana governor, Henry Watkins Allen, discuss wartime conditions in Shreveport, Louisiana, and Allen's experiences as a Confederate refugee in Mexico. Papers of Arnaud Préot and family (1837-1885) pertain to the management of a girls' school in Virginia and include Confederate civilians' letters (1861-1864) which discuss wartime conditions and public opinion of the war. The collection contains sheet music and printed items.

Henry Watkins Allen, a lawyer in Mississippi, married Salome Crane (d. 1851) in 1842. He was elected to the Mississippi State Legislature in 1845. He moved to Louisiana in 1852, worked as a planter on Allendale Plantation, and was elected to the Louisiana State Legislature in 1854. Allen served in the Civil War as a lieutenant-colonel in the Delta Rifles of the 4th Louisiana Regiment. Wounded at Shiloh and Baton Rouge in 1862, Allen left active duty and was elected Confederate Governor of Louisi...
